Oasis: A Tale of Love and Class Struggle
Dearest readers, I have lately been acquainted with a tale most exquisite and heart-warming, that I must share it forthwith. It is the story of Oasis, a film that has captured the hearts of many for its sincerity, beauty and depth. This motion picture, released in 2002, was directed by Lee Chang-dong and stars Sol Kyung-gu and Moon So-ri as the leads.
The tale takes place in modern-day South Korea but resonates with themes familiar to all those who cherish Austen’s stories. Here we have two characters from opposite sides of society who fall in love despite societal constraints. The boy, Jong-du (Sol Kyung-gu), is a simple-minded man just released from jail after serving time for a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a child. He is shunned by his family and society at large as an outcast.
On the other hand, our heroine Gong-ju (Moon So-ri) comes from a well-to-do family but is paralyzed due to cerebral palsy. She too is an outcast within her own milieu and finds solace only in art books and music.
The film begins with Jong-du looking for his estranged family with no success until he finally finds his brother’s apartment where he meets Gong-ju’s brother (played brilliantly by Ahn Nae-sang) who mistakes him for someone else and invites him to stay for dinner.
It is during this meal that Jong-du lays eyes on Gong-ju who captures his soul immediately. Despite their physical limitations, they soon form a connection beyond words – one of empathy, understanding and respect.
Their love bears fruit in scenes that are both tender and tragic. The obstacles they face are not just societal norms but also their own imperfect selves.
At one point when Gong-ju shares her innermost desires, Jong-du responds with the most poignant line that Austen herself would have approved of: “I want to be the wind that carries your voice and the rain that touches your face.”
The acting in this movie is beyond measure – Sol Kyung-gu delivers a performance so powerful it earned him Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival – an award well-deserved. Moon So-ri portrays disability with such dexterity and subtlety that one forgets she is not physically disabled.
Apart from its brilliant acting, Oasis also boasts of stunning cinematography and an original score by Jo Yeong-wook that complements every scene perfectly.
Despite its critical acclaim, this film stirred controversy in Korea due to sensitive themes of sex, mental disability and criminal justice. It was first banned then later given a limited release. Nevertheless, Oasis has stood the test of time and has been recognized globally.
It won Best Director at Cannes Film Festival, Best Film at Tokyo International Film Festival and was nominated for numerous awards in Korea.
For those who have not yet seen Oasis, I implore you to give it a chance. It is a celebration of life’s variegated shades and a testament to the power of love amidst societal constraints.
In these trying times when we are all struggling against our own limitations due to Covid-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to remember that love knows no boundaries – be they physical or societal.
As Austen once wrote: “A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.” And so does Oasis capture our hearts in a matter of moments.
