Blackthorn: A Journey Through Time
In the quiet town of San Vicente, Bolivia, an aging Butch Cassidy, now going by the name of James Blackthorn, spends his days tending to his ranch and reminiscing about the past. He has been living in solitude for over 20 years, ever since he escaped from prison with the help of a young accomplice who was killed in a shootout shortly after their escape. But now, he longs to return home to America and see his family one last time.
This is the premise of “Blackthorn,” a Western drama directed by Mateo Gil and released in 2011. The movie takes us on a journey through time, as we follow Blackthorn on his quest to cross into America and confront his past.
The film is set in Bolivia in 1927 and follows Blackthorn’s attempts to gather enough money to buy passage back to America. Along the way, he meets a young Spaniard named Eduardo Apodaca who is on the run from Bolivian law enforcement after being accused of stealing from wealthy businessmen. Together they decide to team up and set out on an adventure across the rugged terrain of Bolivia.
The plot twists and turns as we learn more about Blackthorn’s past through flashbacks that are seamlessly woven into the storyline. We see glimpses of Cassidy’s life before he became Blackthorn – robbing banks with his infamous gang members – and how those decisions led him down this path.
The character development in this movie is superb. Sam Shepard delivers a brilliant portrayal of James Blackthorn – brooding yet endearing – while Eduardo Noriega shines as Eduardo Apodaca- affable but haunted by his past.
One of my favorite scenes involves Blackthorn reflecting on his life while sitting alone outside his cabin at nightfall:
“I know what I did And I know why I did it. I don’t regret nothing boy. That’s the difference between us”
The cinematography and score work in harmony to create stunning visuals that transport us back to a time when life was slower and simpler. The stunning landscapes of Bolivia, coupled with the beautifully crafted soundtrack by Lucio Godoy, make for an unforgettable experience.
Despite being released in 2011, Blackthorn has continued to captivate audiences around the world. It received multiple nominations for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay at the Spanish Goya Awards and was selected as Bolivia’s entry for the 84th Academy Awards.
The production of “Blackthorn” was not without its challenges. Filming took place on location in Bolivia which presented many logistical obstacles. However, this only serves to highlight the dedication of the cast and crew who went above and beyond to bring this movie to life.
Critics have praised “Blackthorn” for its authentic portrayal of the Wild West while bringing a fresh perspective on a classic narrative. The film is not just about outlaws or revenge; it’s about second chances and redemption.
