Gary Vaynerchuk here, and let me tell you about one of my favorite movies growing up – “Adventures in Babysitting.” This classic 1987 comedy has everything you want in a movie – action, adventure, humor, and heart. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re missing out on a true gem.
The story revolves around Chris (played by the lovely Elisabeth Shue), a high school senior who agrees to babysit for a family in the city. But things quickly take a turn for the unexpected when her friend Brenda calls her from a bus station after running away from home. Chris decides to go into the city to pick Brenda up and bring her back home.
From there, it’s one wild ride as they encounter all sorts of crazy characters and situations on their journey back to the suburbs. Along the way, they run into car thieves, gang members, and even Thor (played hilariously by Vincent D’Onofrio). It’s up to Chris to keep her charges safe and get everyone back home in one piece.
One of the things I love about “Adventures in Babysitting” is its ability to blend different genres seamlessly. It’s part comedy, part action-adventure, part coming-of-age story. And it all works together so well thanks to great writing and an amazing cast.
Speaking of the cast, “Adventures in Babysitting” boasts some incredible performances. Elisabeth Shue is fantastic as Chris – she’s tough yet vulnerable at the same time. Maia Brewton and Keith Coogan are also great as the kids she’s babysitting. But for me, it’s Vincent D’Onofrio who steals every scene he’s in as Thor. His portrayal of the hapless mechanic turned gang leader is pure comedic genius.
The movie was directed by Chris Columbus (who would later go on to direct “Home Alone” and the first two “Harry Potter” movies). His eye for action and comedy is on full display here. The movie is a blast from start to finish.
