In the spirit of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s magical realism, “Like Someone in Love” is a movie that tells us the story of an unexpected and elusive love affair that takes place in Tokyo over the course of one night.
The movie opens with Akiko, a young student who works as a prostitute to pay her university fees. In the opening scene, we see Akiko talking to her grandmother on the phone, lying about what she is doing in Tokyo. She tells her grandmother that she has a part-time job as a waitress, when in reality she is working as an escort.
As the night falls, we see Akiko being sent on an assignment by her pimp. She is asked to go to a hotel room to meet with an elderly professor named Takashi who wants to have sex with her. When they meet, Takashi is surprised by how young Akiko looks and he starts talking to her about his life, rather than having sex with her.
Through their conversation, we learn that Takashi is not interested in sex at all. He only wants someone to talk to him. We learn that he is estranged from his wife and only has his assistant for company. The conversation between Akiko and Takashi gradually turns into something more intimate and meaningful.
As they move around the city together, their relationship takes on different nuances. From companionship through mutual loneliness to fatherly love and ultimately romantic attraction.
