As a behavioral economist, I couldn’t resist watching the movie “Bad Things.” Directed by Peter Berg and released in 1998, this dark comedy-thriller follows the story of a group of friends who go to Las Vegas for a bachelor party, only to accidentally kill a prostitute in their hotel room. From there, things spiral out of control as they try to cover up their crime and deal with the consequences.
Let’s start with the storyline. It’s not exactly original – a group of guys getting into trouble in Vegas has been done before – but it’s executed well. The tension builds throughout the movie as more and more complications arise for the main characters. The plot twists keep you on your toes, never quite sure what’s going to happen next. As far as dark comedies go, “Bad Things” definitely succeeds in delivering what it promises.
The cast is also noteworthy. Cameron Diaz shines as Laura Garrety, the bride-to-be who joins her fiance and his friends on their trip to Vegas. Her performance is both fun and heartbreaking as her character goes through some tough times. Jon Favreau is solid as Kyle Fisher, the groom-to-be who starts off as the moral center of the group but quickly loses his grip on things. Christian Slater steals scenes as Boyd, a mysterious stranger who gets mixed up in their mess.
One standout moment comes from Jeremy Piven’s character Michael Berkow. In a scene where he tries to explain away their horrible actions, he says “It was just supposed to be bad things happening to bad people.” It’s both funny and chilling at the same time – a perfect encapsulation of the tone of “Bad Things.”

The editing is strong throughout – there’s no wasted time or filler scenes here. Every moment serves to further develop either character or plot.
Criticism of “Bad Things” has centered around its somewhat misogynistic undertones. The women in this movie are either victims or used as objects by the male characters. While this is certainly a valid critique, it’s worth noting that the movie doesn’t shy away from showing the consequences of the men’s actions.
Overall, I would recommend “Bad Things” as an entertaining and suspenseful dark comedy. It’s not perfect, but it delivers on its promises and features strong performances from its cast. If you’re in the mood for something both funny and disturbing, give “Bad Things” a watch.
