I must confess to being quite tickled at the prospect of discussing the latest cinematic offering, “Rimini”, in the style of Jane Austen herself. The film follows in the tradition of our beloved author’s works, with its focus on societal norms and expectations, interpersonal relationships, and romantic entanglements. And yet, it manages to inject a refreshing dose of modernity into these timeless themes.
To begin with, let us explore the plot. “Rimini” takes place in 1816 England, where we are introduced to the protagonist, Elizabeth Delaney (played by Emma Watson). Elizabeth is a young woman who has recently lost her parents and is facing an uncertain future. She is taken in by her aunt and uncle, who are members of high society and expect her to marry well. Needless to say, Elizabeth is not entirely on board with this plan.
Enter Henry Fitzwilliam (Henry Cavill), a dashing gentleman with whom Elizabeth develops an immediate rapport. Despite their initial attraction to each other, however, there are numerous obstacles standing in their way – not least of which is Henry’s engagement to another woman. As the film progresses, we see Elizabeth navigate these challenges while also grappling with her own sense of identity and place in society.
One cannot discuss “Rimini” without mentioning its standout cast. In addition to Watson and Cavill, we have performances from Felicity Jones as Henry’s betrothed Lady Caroline Bingley (a character familiar to Austen aficionados), Tom Hiddleston as Elizabeth’s cousin Edward Ferrars, and Miranda Hart as Elizabeth’s loyal friend Charlotte Lucas. Each member of the ensemble brings a nuanced complexity to their roles that elevates the film beyond mere period-piece fluff.
But what truly sets “Rimini” apart is its treatment of its female characters. While Austen was certainly a trailblazer for her time in terms of depicting women with agency and intelligence, “Rimini” takes things a step further by delving deeper into the emotional lives of its female characters. Beyond its script and acting, however, “Rimini” also impresses with its technical elements. The film boasts lush cinematography that captures the beauty and grandeur of the English countryside. The score by Alexandre Desplat is evocative and sweeping, perfectly capturing the film’s emotional highs and lows. And the costume design by Sandy Powell is a feast for the eyes, with intricate period details that transport us back in time.
All in all, “Rimini” is a delightful addition to the canon of Austen-inspired works. It manages to honor the author’s legacy while also carving out its own distinctive niche within the genre. I predict it will be well-received by both fans of Austen and moviegoers looking for a charming romantic comedy with substance.
